TEMPO.CO, Lumajang - Mount Semeru reportedly erupted again on Thursday morning, March 6, 2025. The height of the eruption column was observed to be approximately 1,100 meters above the summit (approximately 4,776 meters above sea level).
The Mount Semeru Observation Post (PGA) officer, Liswanto, reported that the eruption of the highest volcano in Java occurred at 07:06 AM Western Indonesian Time (WIB). The observed ash column appeared white to gray with moderate intensity towards the southwest.
A few minutes later, precisely at 07:20 AM WIB, Semeru erupted again with an observed ash column height of approximately 200 meters above the summit. Subsequently, the observed ash column appeared white to gray with moderate intensity towards the southwest. Liswanto stated, "At the time of this report, the eruption is still ongoing," on Thursday morning, March 6, 2025.
The PGA Semeru report at Mount Sawur, Sumber Wuluh Village, Candipuro District, mentioned that there had been five eruptions since early Thursday morning. However, Semeru's activity level remains at level II (caution). "The status remains cautious (level II)," said Liswanto.
Based on the seismic observation report for the last 24 hours until early Thursday morning, there were recorded 67 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 10-23 mm, and quake durations of 49-191 seconds.
There were also seven tremor quakes with amplitudes of 2-8 mm, and quake durations of 33-66 seconds. Additionally, two harmonic quakes with amplitudes of 2-4 mm and quake durations of 131-185 seconds were recorded. The seismograph also recorded three distant tectonic quakes with amplitudes of 4-30 mm, S-P 14-18 seconds, and quake durations of 37-53 seconds.
At the level II activity level, the Center for Volcanology Mitigation and Geological Disaster (PVMBG) recommends not engaging in any activities in the southeastern sector along Besuk Kobokan up to 8 kilometers from the summit (eruption center).
Beyond this distance, the public should not engage in activities within 500 meters from the river edge (riverbanks) along Besuk Kobokan, as there is potential for being affected by the expansion of pyroclastic flows and lahars up to a distance of 13 kilometers from the summit.
The PVMBG also advises refraining from activities within a 3-kilometer radius from the crater/summit of Mount Semeru due to the risk of being hit by projectiles (volcanic bombs).
The public is urged to be cautious of potential pyroclastic flows and lava avalanches along the rivers/valleys originating from the peak of Mount Semeru, especially along Besuk Kobokan, Besuk Bang, Besuk Kembar, and Besuk Sat, and the potential lahars in the small rivers that are tributaries of Besuk Kobokan.
