TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - East Java volcano, Mount Semeru, erupted on Tuesday night, December 31, 2024, at 20:24 Western Indonesia Time. "The eruption was not observed visually. When the report was made, the eruption was still ongoing," said Mount Semeru Observation Post Officer Liswanto in his written report on Tuesday, December 31, 2024.
According to the officer's records, Mount Semeru erupted 12 times. The first eruption occurred at 00:58, followed by subsequent eruptions at 03:02 and 04:34. The three eruptions were visible with an eruption column height of 800 to 900 meters above the summit.
The other nine eruptions were not visually observed. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with an amplitude of about 20 mm, and the duration of the eruption was also well recorded.
Liswanto said that Mount Semeru is still on alert. Therefore, the Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation Center (PVMBG) advises the public not to do any activities in the southeastern sector along Besuk Kobokan up to eight kilometers from the summit (center of the eruption).
Outside this distance, the public should not do activities within 500 meters of the river bank (river boundary) along Besuk Kobokan, as hot clouds and lava flow could expand up to 13 kilometers from the summit. "The public should also not carry out activities within a radius of three kilometers from the crater/peak of Mount Semeru because of the danger of incandescent rock ejection," Liswanto said.
In addition, the public needs to be aware of the potential for hot clouds, lava avalanches, and rain lava along rivers or valleys that originate at the summit of the volcano, especially along Besuk Kobokan, Besuk Bang, Besuk Kembar, and Besuk Sat, as well as the potential for lava in small rivers that are tributaries of Besuk Kobokan.
