TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - NASA, the United States space agency, has revealed the discovery of a massive diamond-like object in outer space, estimated to be five times larger than Earth. Officially named PSR J1719-1438b, the celestial body stands out as one of the most remarkable findings in recent space exploration.
PSR J1719-1438b is believed to be the remains of a star whose outer layers have been stripped away by a large neutron star, which also functions as a millisecond pulsar. Despite the loss of its outer layers, the remaining core mostly consists of solid carbon.
"Hence, 1438b, in all its essence, is a diamond that is 5 times bigger than that of the Earth!" NASA wrote in its report, cited from The Times of India, Friday, April 11, 2025.
Last year, NASA also recorded another important discovery through the James Webb Space Telescope. A unique planet named 55 Cancri e was found at a distance of about 41 light-years from Earth. This finding shows the existence of highly diverse extreme conditions outside the solar system.
Planet 55 Cancri e is classified as a super-Earth because it is nearly twice the width of Earth and has a mass about nine times greater. The planet orbits very close to its parent star, 55 Cancri A, with one revolution taking only 17 hours.
This proximity causes the planet's surface temperature to reach around 2,400 degrees Celsius, creating conditions of full lava that do not allow for any form of life.
Surprisingly, scientists also found that this planet has a secondary atmosphere that is likely formed from volcanic activity.
"This atmosphere is known to be a result of gases released or of volcanic activity from its lava-like surface. It indicates that the planet has gone through substantial geological advancements regardless of its extreme temperatures," the report stated.
One of the most intriguing aspects of this planet is its composition, which is believed to contain a significant amount of diamond. Scientific studies and research indicate that up to one-third of the planet’s mass could be composed of diamonds.
This discovery is said to challenge scientists' understanding of the composition and formation processes of planets while expanding insights into the diversity of planets in the galaxy.
