TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said on Saturday that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky should "find a way" to improve relations with U.S. President Donald Trump.
In an interview with BBC as quoted by Anadolu, Rutte said he had spoken twice over the phone with Zelensky following a heated debate between him and Trump at the White House.
Rutte said the previous day's dispute between Trump and Zelensky was 'regrettable' and they need to mend their relationship.
"It is important for President Zelensky to find a way to restore his relationship with the President of America and with the senior leadership team of America," Rutte said.
The NATO Secretary General told Zelensky that 'what Trump has done for Ukraine so far must be respected.'
The former Prime Minister of the Netherlands stated that he also spoke with Trump over the phone, and said he was not authorized to disclose the content of the conversation.
He said he raised the issue in a phone conversation with Zelensky and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
Rutte also recalled that during Trump's first presidency, the U.S. approved the sale of Javelin anti-tank missile systems, allowing Ukraine to respond to Russia.
