TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Ukraine is set to propose a ceasefire in the air and sea with Russia during discussions with United States (U.S.) officials in Saudi Arabia on Tuesday, March 11, 2025, said a Ukrainian official on Monday.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has put forward the proposal as a way to initiate talks to halt Russia's full-scale invasion that has lasted for over three years.
"We do have a proposal for a ceasefire in the air and sea, as it is an easy-to-monitor and implementable option to start," the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity as reported by Channel NewsAsia.
Zelensky, whose officials met with the U.S. less than two weeks after his dispute with President Donald Trump at the White House, said that Russia is the "sole reason" for the ongoing war.
Trump has reinstated communication with his counterpart from Russia, Vladimir Putin, and criticized Zelensky. This has raised concerns in Kyiv and among European allies that the U.S. leader may be trying to pressure Ukraine into accepting a settlement favorable to Russia.
He has also ceased U.S. military aid to Ukraine and halted the sharing of U.S. intelligence with Kyiv.
Russia could gain influence on the battlefield if the intelligence gap persists, the Ukrainian official said.
"The main thing is how long it will last. If it persists, it will give Russia a significant advantage," the source added.
They also said there is a possibility that the halt in intelligence sharing has hindered Ukraine's ability to counter retaliatory attacks by Moscow's troops in the western Russian region of Kursk.
Ukraine hopes that its control over Russian territory in the Kursk region will give it leverage during discussions with Moscow.
However, Ukraine has rapidly lost ground there over the past few days due to Russian attacks.
The United States has restricted Ukraine's access to U.S. intelligence that enables specific strikes in Russian territory, the source said.
"So, perhaps there is a link" between the cessation of intelligence sharing and Russia's progress, the source added.
