TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - New Year's Eve celebrations across South Korea are being canceled following the deadly crash of a Jeju Air plane on Sunday, December 29, 2024. The government has declared a period of national mourning since the tragic accident at Muan International Airport, South Jeolla Province, until January 4, 2024.
A Jeju Air plane flying from Bangkok, Thailand, crashed upon landing at Muan International Airport. The B737-800 aircraft carrying 175 passengers and 6 crew members hit the airport wall after skidding off the runway and exploded. The death toll reached 179, with 2 survivors.
Sunrise festivals canceled nationwide
Local governments are canceling New Year celebrations, reflecting the subdued atmosphere in the country following the plane crash. Citing the Chosun Biz, the Mapo District in Seoul announced on Monday the cancellation of the “2025 Red Road Countdown Event” planned from 9 p.m. on December 31 to 12:30 a.m. on the new year, as well as the “2025 Sky Park Sunrise Festival” scheduled for January 1, 2025.
However, the government will keep beverage booths and shelters on standby to accommodate visitors coming to see the sunrise at Sky Park.
Seodaemun District has canceled the “2025 Sinchon Countdown Concert,” scheduled at Star Plaza, Yonsei-ro, Sinchon from 7:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. on the new year.
The “New Year's Wish Sunrise Event,” planned for the area near Ansan Beacon Mound, has also been canceled. However, the government will ensure safety measures are in place as initially planned to accommodate residents who will climb the mountain.
Gwangjin District canceled the New Year's sunrise festival that was set to be held at Achasan, a famous “sunrise spot” in Seoul. Songpa District also halted a similar event planned at Mangwol-dong in Olympic Park. Meanwhile, Yangcheon District canceled five planned sunrise events, including one at Yongwangsan.
Dobong District decided not to hold local events or festivals during the national mourning period and canceled the planned New Year's sunrise event. Gangbuk District has annually held a sunrise event at North Seoul Dream Forest with district residents but announced that it will be canceled this year to respect the bereaved families of the Jeju Air plane crash.
Eunpyeong District canceled the “2025 Bongsan Sunrise Festival.”
Events that were to be held at popular East Coast sunrise spots have also been canceled one after another, including the “27th Homigot Korean People's Sunrise Festival” at Homigot Sunrise Park.
Instead, the park will set up a space to mourn the tragedy, but large tents and air domes will be installed to provide warmth for tourists coming to see the new year's sunrise.
Bell-ringing ceremonies canceled
Gyeongju City canceled the bell-ringing ceremony of Nyeoin Bell scheduled for 11:00 p.m. on December 31 at Nodong-dong. Yeongdeok County and Yeongdeok Culture and Tourism Foundation canceled the Gyeongbuk Daejong bell-ringing ceremony that was scheduled to be held at 10:00 p.m. on December 31 at Samsa Marine Park in Ganggu-myeon.
Local governments on the West Coast, known for sunset spots, also canceled events. Taean County in South Chungcheong Province canceled the planned sunset and sunrise events. Seocheon County also canceled the sunset event as well as the fireworks and rice cake soup-sharing event scheduled for midnight on New Year's Day.
Buyeo County in South Chungcheong Province also decided to cancel the sunrise event planned for January 1. Cheonan City canceled all events, including the 2024 year-end event scheduled for December 31, the New Year's Sunrise event on January 1, and the New Year's Day event on January 3.
Sejong City fully canceled the sunrise event that was scheduled to be held at Sejong Lake Park on January 1. The citizen-led festival group also canceled the New Year's Countdown Drone Show and fireworks show scheduled for the night. Sejong City decided to set up an incense offering altar in front of the city hall plaza instead, to mourn the Jeju Air tragedy.
