TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Permanent Council of the 35-member states Organization of American States (OAS) will hold an emergency meeting on Tuesday morning, January 6, 2026, local time, to address the situation in Venezuela following the U.S. attack.
"The Permanent Council of the Organization of American States (OAS) will hold a special meeting on Tuesday, January 6 at 10:00 EST (15:00 GMT) in the Simón Bolivar room at OAS headquarters, “to consider recent events in the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela," the organization said in a statement on late Sunday, local time, as quoted by Antara.
The meeting will be broadcast live.
On January 3, the United States launched a massive attack on Venezuela, abducting President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, and bringing them to New York.
U.S. President Donald Trump announced that Maduro and Flores will be tried on "narco-terrorism" charges and considered a threat to the United States.
Meanwhile, the Supreme Court of Venezuela has appointed Vice President Delcy Rodriguez as the interim leader of the country.
Several left-leaning American countries, such as Cuba and Brazil, have condemned the U.S. aggression and the abduction of Maduro. However, countries with right-wing leaders, such as Argentina and Ecuador, have backed Washington's unilateral actions.
Statement by 5 Latin American Countries
Spain, along with five Latin American countries, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, and Uruguay, had previously issued a joint statement condemning the possibility of external parties taking control of Venezuela's government or resources.
This stance was expressed in a joint statement on Sunday after U.S. President Donald Trump said Washington would "run Venezuela" and exploit the country's oil after a military operation that ousted Nicolas Maduro.
According to Al Arabiya, the six countries have stated their rejection of the U.S. military operation that ousted Maduro and expressed concern about any attempt to control the government, administration, or takeover of natural and strategic resources by external parties.
International Law Violations
As reported by Euronews, the leaders of the six countries emphasized that the actions of the United States have violated basic principles of international law, especially "the prohibition of the use of force and respect for territorial sovereignty" as stipulated in the Charter of the United Nations (UN).
"These actions constitute a dangerous precedent for peace, regional security and pose a risk to the civil population," they said.
The statement also emphasized that the crisis in Venezuela must be resolved through dialogue and in accordance with the will of the Venezuelan people, without interference and while adhering to international law.
The six signatory countries then expressed their concerns about the potential control of Venezuela's resources by external parties.
