TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Minister of Migrant Workers Protection (P2MI) Abdul Kadir Karding stated that there are 1.3 million job openings available for Indonesian workers abroad. These opportunities come from various countries ranging from Asia to Europe.

He explained that the highest demand comes from Saudi Arabia, which seeks 200,000 to 300,000 workers, followed by Japan, which asks for about 100,000-200,000 workers.

"Not to mention Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Europe. Europe also has started to request a lot [of workers] from us," said Karding when met at his office in Jakarta on Wednesday, February 19, 2025.

Out of the total demand, he mentioned that Indonesia can currently only fulfill 297,000 positions. This is due to many potential human resources not meeting the required criteria, such as skills, language proficiency, and mental resilience. "Whether we like it or not, we have to prepare massive training," he said.

Furthermore, this year, the P2MI Ministry aims to send up to 425,000 migrant workers. Karding said that with the increasing number of Indonesian migrants, he also aims to improve the quality of their work. So far, 80 percent of jobs obtained by Indonesian workers (TKI) come from domestic work or household jobs.

"With massive training, the government targets to reduce this composition to 60 or 70 percent," he said.

In addition to reducing unemployment, Karding revealed that the government's aim to increase the number of migrant workers is in a bid to boost economic growth.

According to Karding, the more Indonesians work abroad, the more money circulates in the migrant worker sector.

Just last year, he said, the country's income from Indonesian workers reached around Rp251 trillion, "The second largest number after oil and gas," he said.

In order to achieve this target, the P2MI Ministry is collaborating with state-owned enterprises (SOEs) and national flag carrier Garuda Indonesia to intensify promotion. Eventually, all transportation sectors owned by state-owned enterprises, from flights and trains to ports, will advertise job offers for Indonesian migrant workers.

Meanwhile, Garuda Indonesia will be the main airline company used by the government whenever workers are dispatched.

"That's why we want to use all our officials and Indonesian Migrant Workers (PMI) to only use Garuda Indonesia," said Karding.
