TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Indonesian Presidential Palace has issued an apology following widespread flooding in Jakarta and surrounding areas, as the central government coordinates with the Jakarta Provincial Government and disaster management agencies to mitigate the impact.

State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi expressed concern over the heavy rains that triggered the floods.

“We apologize to all affected citizens,” he said at the Presidential Palace on Thursday, January 22, 2026.

According to Prasetyo, forecasts from the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) indicate that heavy rainfall is expected to continue in Jakarta and neighboring areas until the end of January.

To help mitigate the flooding, the government is conducting weather modification operations across the Jabodetabek region. “These efforts aim to reduce the intensity of the rainfall,” Prasetyo said.

President Prabowo Subianto, currently attending the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, is reportedly monitoring the situation closely.

“He continues to communicate with us on the ground and follow developments,” Prasetyo added.

Prasetyo also noted that flooding has affected the northern coast of Java, including railway lines, causing disruptions to public train services. The president has instructed his staff to analyze the root causes of flooding and is overseeing the construction progress of the Giant Sea Wall along Java’s northern coast.

Jakarta’s Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) reported that heavy rainfall caused flooding across multiple neighborhoods in the capital.

Mohamad Yohan, Head of BPBD’s Data and Information Center, said, “The heavy rains in Jakarta and surrounding areas have inundated several locations,” on Thursday.

The floods have also impacted rail travel. PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) canceled several train services due to inundation. Between January 17 and January 19, about 38,000 passengers requested ticket refunds.

Anne Purba, KAI’s Vice President of Corporate Communication, explained that service disruptions were necessary to ensure safety amid extreme weather.

“These arrangements ensure that operations remain safe for passengers and staff,” Anne said. She added that heavy rains since January 16 led to river overflows and embankment breaches along the Pekalongan-Sragi route, while in Jakarta, flooding affected multiple residential areas and operational road sections.
