Sometimes, you may even encounter couples who are touchy-feely with one another, from holding hands, hugging, or even kissing in public. They are often referred to as a PDA, or public display of affection.
What is PDA in a relationship?
Citing Verywell Mind, a PDA is any act of intimacy between a couple that is done in view of others, which encompasses holding hands, caressing each other, hugging, kissing, and other intimate moments.
These public displays of intimacy don’t only apply to physical places, but to public forums as well, such as social media.
PDA has long been a controversial subject, with some disapproving of it, thinking it’s inappropriate to show such private moments in front of others. Those who find it distasteful often cite cultural norms and societal rules to dismiss such acts as unbefitting in public.
Regardless, others believe public display of affection is romantic.
Benefits of PDA in a relationship
While many consider PDA a negative thing, public display of affection occurs naturally in a relationship. From a psychological point of view, physical touch given to a partner or loved one does not equal a breach of privacy. The bond that is formed often subconsciously drives a couple to express their affection in public through touch.
From a biological perspective, physical touch in a relationship has been proven to be beneficial in reducing stress and improving bonding and intimacy. This indicates that physical touch has a positive impact on releasing stress hormones in a person.
However, it is undeniable that some types of physical touch are often done intentionally. Meaning, couples consciously and deliberately want to show affection in public. This can be considered a sign of commitment to showing love to a partner, regardless of public opinion.
However, it is also important to consider whether your PDA may disrupt the comfort of those around you.
