TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Leader of Central Executive Board of Indonesian Democratic Party (PDIP) Chairperson, Deddy Yevri Hanteru Sitorus, emphasized that a strong relationship between President Prabowo Subianto and Joko Widodo does not necessarily require their policies to be aligned.
According to him, Prabowo should not be concerned about people who want to separate him from Jokowi because they now hold different positions.
"Of course, they should have parted ways. They are different people now and shouldn't be mixed up. They really should have parted ways. One is a former president; the other is a president," said Deddy when met at the Senayan Parliament Complex on Tuesday, February 11, 2025.
Member of the House of Representatives (DPR) Commission II made the statement in response to Prabowo's comment that there are parties who want to separate him from Jokowi.
According to Deddy, President Prabowo has his own distinct characteristics. "A good relationship doesn't mean that they have to stick together, where Prabowo's decisions should be in line with Jokowi's," he said.
Previously, Prabowo mentioned that there were parties who wanted to separate him from Jokowi, claiming that this could jeopardize Indonesia's unity, similar to the tactics used during colonial times.
"There are people who now want to drive a wedge between me and Pak Jokowi. It's funny and could be a subject of laughter, but let's not. Let's not participate in dividing. This is what those who don't like Indonesia do," said Prabowo during a speech at the 18th Congress of Muslimat NU at Jatim Expo Surabaya, Monday, February 10, 2025.
Prabowo stated that his relationship with Jokowi is just fine. He openly acknowledged that he learned politics from Jokowi and wants Jokowi to be respected as the 7th President of the Republic of Indonesia.
"In terms of politics, I learned from Pak Jokowi. There's no need to feel ashamed [to acknowledge it]. Sometimes when a person no longer holds power, they want to criticize him. Let's not do that. Let's respect everyone," said Prabowo.
