TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth made a surprising statement. He said that Chinese hypersonic missiles can destroy all US aircraft carriers in just 20 minutes.
Hegseth, who also serves as the head of the Pentagon, acknowledged China's greatness. "So far, our entire power projection platform is aircraft carriers and the ability to project power strategically around the world," Hegseth said, according to Interesting Engineering, as reported by Ukraine Today.
He added that 15 Chinese hypersonic missiles can destroy 10 aircraft carriers in the first 20 minutes of war. Hegseth noted that the US has lost to China in every war game the Pentagon has played. "China is building an army that is specifically designed to destroy the US," Hegseth said confidently.
According to him, this is due to the mistakes of the US bureaucracy and the slow purchase of weapons amidst China's increasing dominance.
According to a recent report by the US Department of Defense, China's hypersonic missile technology has advanced significantly over the past 20 years. China has become very modern.
Previously, the NATO Secretary General warned that China's military development was taking place at an extraordinary pace. China's military prowess poses a direct threat to stability around the world.
At the same time, the US command allows for a military confrontation with China. But the US lacks a large number of weapons, which raises concerns.
Hegseth also proposed reviving the US military base in Panama. He also wants to rotate the deployment of US troops to the isthmus that the United States invaded 35 years ago.
Hegseth said as reported by France 24, the US is seeking free passage through the canal for Navy ships. US President Donald Trump has previously repeatedly claimed that China has too much influence over the Panama Canal. Even though this canal is a route for 40 percent of US container traffic and five percent of world trade.
Hegseth on Wednesday proposed that several former US military bases scattered around Panama could be reused to house US troops.
