TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Social Minister Saifullah Yusuf or Gus Ipul stated that People's School plans to open recruitment for students and teachers in late March or early April 2025. The opening will take place upon the approval of President Prabowo Subianto.
As of now, Gus Ipul said that People's School is ready to run in 53 locations. "However, the data will continue to evolve as in the next 2-3 days we will coordinate with the governors, regents, mayors, where the preparations we are doing are parallel," Gus Ipul said in an official statement on Tuesday, March 11, 2025.
Gus Ipul said that this program will begin no earlier than July 2025 in areas where infrastructure and support facilities are ready.
"Following facilities and infrastructure, we are ready in 41 centers and halls owned by the Ministry of Social. Then there are 9 in East Java, 2 universities, and 1 in West Sumatra. In total, 53 locations are ready," said Gus Ipul.
According to Gus Ipul, President Prabowo asked for this program to be further refined and could cover as many areas as possible.
People's School will provide quality free education for children from poor and extremely poor families. The government targets participants from the 1st and 2nd deciles based on the Integrated Social and Economic National Data (DTSEN). The selection process will be gradual, starting with economic status verification, followed by academic testing.
People's School will be open for elementary, junior high, and high school levels following national education standards. In addition to formal subjects, the curriculum will also emphasize character building, leadership, nationalism, and skills.
Gus Ipul assures that People's School is a free school and all students' needs will be met in its implementation. "100 percent free school. Uniforms, meals, everything is free, and there are dormitories for student accommodation," said Gus Ipul.
He added that the People's School is a collaboration program across ministries/agencies and local governments. "This is teamwork, the Ministry of Social is not alone," said Gus Ipul.
