TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - PT Pertamina Geothermal Energy Tbk (PGE) and PT Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indonesia (TMMIN) have signed a joint declaration for the development of a green hydrogen ecosystem in Indonesia. PGE President Director, Julfi Hadi, referred to this cooperation as part of the efforts to accelerate the transition to clean energy while supporting the Net Zero Emission 2060 target.

Green hydrogen produced from geothermal energy is projected to support hydrogen-based vehicle ecosystems in the future. "Although the economic aspect remains a challenge, PGE is optimistic that green hydrogen can be a solution for clean energy if supported by the right ecosystem and business model," Julfi said in a statement on Wednesday, September 24, 2025.

Julfi added that the development of green hydrogen is a beyond-electricity strategy being pursued by PGE by utilizing geothermal heat. According to him, geothermal heat is not only for power generation, but also drives the creation of derivative products of clean energy that are beneficial for society and the environment.TMMIN Technical Director, Widjanarko, sees this collaboration as an important step toward diversifying future energy sources.

"Indonesia needs a variety of energy sources, ranging from affordable to premium, with low emissions. Geothermal heat can be one of the pillars of clean energy in the future," he said.

This is not the first collaboration between PGE and Toyota. Previously, they worked together to develop new renewable energy sources, such as lubricants, biodiesel from palm oil, and bioethanol, which are environmentally friendly alternatives.

This latest step is another part of PGE's initiative. In early September, PGE launched the Ulubelu Green Hydrogen Pilot Project. The pilot project utilizes geothermal heat with energy-efficient electrolysis technology. In addition to being a production facility, this facility also serves as a technology learning center, a commercial feasibility test, and a market study to map potential future demand.
