Poetry Against Terror: 322 Artists Support Tempo with Poems

3 days ago 14

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Nusantara Artists Community has united in supporting Tempo following the pig's head terror and rat carcass. Poet Mustafa Ismail stated that as of Tuesday, March 25, 2025, there were already 332 artists, writers, journalists, cultural activists, academics, and a Brunei Darussalam writer giving their support in the form of a statement. "Together with Tempo to nurture press freedom, freedom of thought, and expression," said Mustafa via a messaging application on Tuesday afternoon.

Support was not only in the form of joint statements submitted by representatives of artists to Tempo on Monday, March 24, 2025, but also in the form of poetry circulating on social media. On that occasion, poet Ahmadun Yosi Herfanda read the statement of support and testimonies were read by Zulfikar Akbar, Ireng Halimun, and writer and lawyer, Mayumi.

At the Tempo building in South Jakarta, poets also read out poems condemning the terror, including Willy Ana, Kurnia Effendi, Shobir Poer, Wahyu Topeng, and Gilang Sulaeman.

Indonesiana Dancer Performs Queen Graeni's Dance

Indonesiana dancer Ayuningtyas Wicaksono also provided moral support to Tempo, along with dozens of artists from various genres who attended on the previous Monday. The dancer, commonly known as Nesia, performed beautifully in a green kebaya.

Tempo's photo journalist, Gunawan Wicaksono, presented the Queen Graeni dance as a form of moral support, particularly to the journalist and host of the Bocor Alus Tempo podcast, Francisca Christy Rosana, who received the pig's head terror.

The Ratu Graeni dance was created by R. Tjetje Somantri in 1949. The dance depicts a Queen from the Medang Kamulan Kingdom defending her country from the attack of her enemy, Prabu Gandawikalpa. "This dance portrays a fair and wise female leader who serves as a role model for the community," said Gunawan, Nesia's father, in a Facebook post.

A wave of sympathy and support flowed through the virtual world to support Tempo, following the delivery of the pig head package to the Tempo editorial office on Wednesday, March 19, 2025. The hashtag 'Kami Bersama Tempo' (We are with Tempo) with the tags Lawan Teror (Fight Terror) and Save Tempo received hundreds of supporters from various professionals such as writers, poets, academics, journalists, and others. This movement continues to grow as of the writing of this report.

"For us-artists, writers, literary figures, and cultural activists- the press is an entity that provides space and supports creative expression. The suppression of freedom of expression in the press means the death of creative expression space. We condemn all disturbances to press freedom. We denounce the 'pig head terror' against Tempo. Such violence cannot be tolerated and must be opposed," read the joint statement.

Among the names are cultural activists, poetry and literary writers who are also Tempo journalists. Some of them include; Mustafa Ismail, Iwan Kurniawan, Tulus Wijanarko, Seno Joko Suyono, Gunawan Wicaksono, Ayu Cipta, Deden Abdul Azis, and Kukuh. S. Wibowo.

Poets supporting Tempo include Ahmadun Yosi Herfanda (Litera Chief Editor, a poet from Tangerang Selatan), Iyut Fitra (poet from Padang), Gol A Gong (Duta Baca Indonesia 2021-2025) from Banten, Eka Budianta (Jakarta), and Tommy F Awuy (writer, academician).

Chronology of the Pig Head Package

On Wednesday, March 19, 2025, a package without a sender's identity arrived at Tempo in Jakarta. The mysterious package was wrapped in a cardboard box lined with styrofoam. The package was received by security personnel on Wednesday at around 16:15 WIB.

The package was addressed to Cica. At Tempo, Cica is the nickname of Francisca Christy Rosana, a political desk journalist and host of the Bocor Alus Politik podcast.

The next day, Thursday, March 20, 2025, Cica only received the package at 15:00 WIB (Western Indonesian Time) after returning from coverage with Husein Arbi Dongoran, who is also a host of the Bocor Alus Politik podcast.

The package was placed on the table and slowly opened by Husein. "Cica brought a large unknown package from below. It was then brought to our Tempo office floor. When we began to open it, there was already a foul smell, and upon checking, indeed it was a pig's head," said Husein via Tempo's TV channel.
