TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The police are continuing their search for 28 convicts who escaped from the Class II B Penitentiary in Kutacane, Southeast Aceh. Meanwhile, 24 out of the 52 escapees have been recaptured and returned to their cells.
"As of the latest update, 28 inmates are still being pursued," said the Public Relations Officer of the Directorate General of Corrections, Rika Aprianti, in a written statement on Wednesday, March 12, 2025.
Rika explained that the search operation is being carried out by a joint task force consisting of the Southeast Aceh District Police and the Aceh Regional Police.
Meanwhile, the Head of Public Relations for the Aceh Regional Police, Commissioner Joko Krisdiyanto, stated that a platoon of Mobile Brigade personnel has been deployed around the prison to prevent any further disturbances.
Joko also noted that several areas in Southeast Aceh have been combed in search of the fugitives. He urged the public to remain vigilant and report any sightings of the escaped convicts.
"We call on the public to immediately report if they spot any of the escapees," Joko said in a written statement on Tuesday, March 11, 2025.
Previously, it was reported that a total of 52 inmates from Class II B Kutacane Prison had escaped on Monday, March 10, 2025.
According to the chronology provided by the Southeast Aceh District Police based on accounts from prison officers, the escape occurred during the distribution of food before breaking the fast. The meal was handed out individually, leading to dissatisfaction among the inmates.
At approximately 06:25 PM, unrest broke out, and the inmates forced their way through the iron gate separating the secure prison area. Once the gate collapsed, dozens of prisoners rushed toward the main exit, leading to the mass breakout.
