According to the Vatican, as reported by ABC, Pope Francis returned to work despite being seriously ill. Oxygen levels were slightly reduced.
Before being hospitalized, the Pope had called an Argentine parish priest in Gaza every day to check on conditions there.
The 88-year-old pope is being treated for pneumonia and a complex lung infection at Rome's Gemelli hospital. Thousands of Catholics gathered in St. Peter's Square on Monday evening, February 24, 2025 to attend a prayer service for Pope Francis.
Amid concerns over Pope Francis' health, the Vatican said Monday evening that his condition had shown slight improvement.
"Today there was no episode of respiratory asthma attack; some laboratory tests have improved," the Vatican said in a statement. Pope Francis had worked in the afternoon after receiving the Eucharist in the morning.
Pope Francis' doctor said his treatment would last several days. It is the longest hospitalization in Francis' nearly 12-year papacy. Catholics around the world are praying for his recovery.
He has long suffered from bronchitis that developed into double pneumonia. The Vatican warned for the first time on Saturday that the pope was in critical condition.
On Sunday he was given high-flow oxygen via a nasal cannula. Blood tests showed early mild but manageable kidney failure.
The condition of the pope, who had part of a lung removed as a young man, has fueled speculation about whether he will resign. Francis has not ruled out the possibility in the past. His predecessor, Benedict XVI, in 2013 became the first pope since the Middle Ages to resign because of his physical and mental health.
