TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Vatican has released an update on the health of Pope Francis, who is currently receiving treatment at Gemelli Hospital in Rome. According to the Vatican, as reported by Reuters, the Pope's health condition worsened unexpectedly.
Pope Francis, 88, has been hospitalized in Rome since February 14 due to a severe respiratory tract infection that led to further complications. "This afternoon ... the Holy Father experienced an isolated bronchospasm crisis," the Vatican announced in a health update on Friday, February 28, 2025.
The Vatican explained that the Pope experienced a narrowing of the airways, similar to an asthma attack. He suffered from vomiting while inhaling air, causing a sudden and significant decline in his breathing.
Subsequently, the Pope received assistance to clear the vomit from his airways, followed by non-invasive mechanical ventilation. The Vatican also clarified that the Pope remained conscious throughout the episode.
This news arrived just three days after the Vatican reported a slight improvement in the Pope's condition, noting that he had successfully fought off a complex infection caused by multiple microorganisms.
A Vatican official, speaking anonymously due to lack of authorization, stated that the Pope's breathing difficulty on Friday was brief. The Pope received breathing assistance through a thin mask covering his nose and mouth.
Doctors estimate that it will take 24-48 hours to fully assess his clinical condition. In the preceding two days, Pope Francis had not been in critical condition.
The Pope's last prolonged asthma-like breathing crisis occurred on February 22, with no recurrences until Friday. For the past two years, the Pope's health has been generally stable. However, he remains vulnerable to lung infections due to a past bout of pleurisy during his youth, resulting in the removal of a portion of his lungs.
The Vatican has not yet disclosed the duration of the Pope's hospital stay. The Pope will not lead the Church's annual service next week, which marks the beginning of the Lent period for Christians.
The service on March 5, known as Ash Wednesday, initiates the 40-day period leading to Easter Sunday. This service will be conducted by senior Vatican officials.
