TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Pope Francis made his first public appearance since leaving the hospital after being treated for double pneumonia. He entered Saint Peter's Square in the Vatican on Sunday, April 6, 2025, greeted by cheers from the crowd.
Fransiskus, 88, has not been seen in public since March 23, 2025, when he briefly addressed the public before leaving Gemelli Hospital in Rome after more than five weeks of treatment. Pope Francis experienced pneumonia, the most serious health crisis in his 12-year papacy.
Pope Francis's first appearance surprised the public as it was not announced beforehand. He appeared in the square shortly before noon at the end of the Catholic Church's Jubilee Year mass celebration.
As quoted from Al Arabiya, Pope Francis came to the main altar for the service under the bright sunlight, waving to the crowd before speaking briefly.
Pope Francis greeted the people with "Happy Sunday.'' His voice was still weak as he was still using a small tube to get oxygen.
Pope Francis smiled broadly as he greeted the crowd. His voice, though weak, sounded stronger than when he appeared on March 23. At that time, he seemed to have difficulty speaking.
Pope Francis usually prays at Saint Peter's Square every Sunday. However, he has not been able to do so since February 9, before going to the hospital.
He was admitted to the hospital on February 14 due to suffering from bronchitis that developed into double pneumonia. He had suffered from pleurisy in his younger years, and part of his lungs had been removed.
Doctors had advised Francis to rest for two months at his residence in the Vatican for recovery. The Vatican has not said whether the Pope can lead the Easter celebration on April 20, 2025.
