TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Prabowo Subianto ensures that there are no rogue speculators raising food prices ahead of Ramadan. One of the steps to take, he said, is asking the ministers to prevent price hikes, without detailing further.
"Not only monitoring, but taking executive and effective steps to ensure that there are no merchants taking advantage of the Ramadan opportunity to raise unreasonable prices," said Prabowo at the Halim Perdanakusuma Air Force Base (Lanud) in Jakarta on Friday, February 28, 2025.
The Head of State claims to have been monitoring the developments in food prices in recent weeks.
From the monitoring, Prabowo claims to have asked the Coordinating Minister for Food Affairs Zulkifli Hasan, Trade Minister (Mendag) Budi Santoso, Agriculture Minister Andi Amran Sulaiman, and other relevant ministers to ensure the availability of staple goods. Prabowo also asked them to prevent speculatively driven price hikes.
"We work hard so that all people, especially those who need it most, can afford these commodities," said Prabowo.
In addition, Prabowo said that he had asked Transportation Minister Dudy Purwagandhi, State-Owned Enterprises Minister Erick Thohir, Public Works Minister Dody Hanggodo, and all ministers to ensure safe and smooth public services ahead of the annual exodus.
"The ministers will monitor and ensure that all transportation facilities and public services can operate smoothly, safely, and facilitate people's homecoming flow," he said.
Prabowo also said that the government will prepare to reduce airline ticket prices. The government is also preparing a toll road fee reduction on several main roads during the Eid al-Fitr holiday and Nyepi Day in 2025.
Previously, the government held a market operation at more than 4,000 locations throughout Ramadan 1446 Hijriah. Deputy Coordinating Minister for Political and Security Affairs Lodewijk Freidrich Paulus said the market operation had started since Monday, February 24, 2025.
This market operation ensures that rising prices would not affect essential needs, such as beef, chicken, chili, and cooking oil.
"The government guarantees the fulfillment of people's needs during Ramadan and also the celebration of Eid al-Fitr," said Lodewijk after a meeting to prepare for Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr at the Coordinating Ministry for Political and Security Affairs on Monday, February 24, 2025.
Lodewijk said market operations will be conducted regularly in all regions, to ensure that all food prices remain within the maximum retail price (HET) limit. According to a Golkar Party politician, the government's main concern is the sufficiency of staple foods, gas, and fuel needs.
The market operations monitors 5 prioritized commodities. There are cooking oil, garlic, consumer sugar, frozen buffalo meat, and SPHP rice. Other types of food are also provided.
