TEMPO.COJakarta - President Prabowo Subianto has detailed his reasons for signing the Board of Peace Charter, an initiative launched by United States President Donald Trump. According to Prabowo, joining this newly formed institution represents a historic opportunity.

Prabowo views his membership in the Board of Peace as a strategic effort to secure peace in Gaza, Palestine. "I believe this is a historic opportunity. This is a real chance to achieve peace in Gaza," Prabowo stated after signing the charter in Davos, Switzerland, on Thursday, January 22, 2026.

Prabowo expressed Indonesia's hope that this new body will contribute to global peace. "I truly hope for its success, and Indonesia stands ready to participate. This is for anyone who desires peace and wants to help the people of Gaza and Palestine," he said, in a broadcast via the Presidential Secretariat's social media.

Prabowo asserted that the situation in Gaza has improved following the Israeli aggression that began in 2023. "The suffering of the people in Gaza has clearly decreased; it has decreased significantly. Significantly," remarked the Gerindra Party Chairperson.

According to Prabowo, humanitarian aid is now successfully entering Gaza. He noted that such assistance has reached the Palestinian people in substantial quantities.

Prabowo attended the inauguration of the Board of Peace in Davos, Switzerland, on Thursday, January 22, 2026. The event was attended by representatives from 21 other nations, including various heads of state. During the proceedings, these leaders took turns signing the Board of Peace Charter.

The ceremony opened with a special address from Trump. "This is a very exciting day, long in the making," Trump shared via the White House’s social media on Thursday.

Trump noted that the assembled heads of state comprised the inaugural group to join the Board of Peace. "We are truly honored by your presence today, leaders of countries," the Republican politician stated.

Trump's speech lasted approximately 20 minutes. Throughout his remarks, Trump touched upon various subjects, including what he views as his major achievements as President of the United States. Among these, he claimed to have brought an end to eight wars during his tenure since January of last year. Trump also mentioned that the Board of Peace will collaborate with multiple international entities, including the United Nations.

Following the address, Trump signed the Board of Peace Charter, followed by the other heads of state. These leaders, Prabowo included, took turns signing the document alongside Trump.

The launch of the Board of Peace coincided with the ongoing World Economic Forum in Davos. In addition to Prabowo, heads of state present at the launch of Trump’s initiative included Argentine President Javier Milei, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan.

The Board of Peace is a fresh initiative from Trump, with one of its primary objectives being to oversee reconstruction efforts in Gaza, Palestine, following the Israeli attacks.

Prior to the launch, Israel announced it had accepted Trump’s invitation to join the Board of Peace. According to reports from Al Jazeera, the office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced their acceptance via social media on Wednesday, January 21, 2026.
