TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto expressed confidence that the country’s free nutritious meals program, known as MBG, could soon surpass the daily portions served by the fast-food giant McDonald’s.
He made the statement during his speech at the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting in Davos, Switzerland, on Thursday, January 22, 2026.
Prabowo highlighted that his administration has redirected resources from inefficient programs to initiatives that directly benefit the people.
“On January 6, 2025, we launched the free nutritious meal program for pregnant women, nursing mothers, toddlers, and all children across Indonesia,” he said, according to the official World Economic Forum website.
The program began with 190 provider kitchens, or nutritional fulfillment service units, reaching approximately 570,000 beneficiaries on its first day.
“Up until last night, we have produced 59.8 million meals for children, mothers, and isolated elderly. They receive these meals every day,” Prabowo noted.
To put the scale in context, McDonald’s reportedly serves 68 million customers daily worldwide. “In approximately one month, we will surpass McDonald’s daily meal production,” the Great Indonesia Movement Party chairman added.
Prabowo also pointed to the historical scale of McDonald’s early operations, noting that MBG’s rapid growth is unprecedented. He projected that the program will reach 82.9 million portions in less than two years.
“Our goal is to serve 82.9 million meals daily by the end of December 2026,” Prabowo said. “But my people say, ‘No, Sir, we will reach 82.9 million before December.’ So, hopefully, we can achieve that.”
