TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Minister of Law and Human Rights, Supratman Andi Agtas, denied that President Prabowo Subianto had intervened in the judicial power. Prabowo was recently known to have gathered Supreme Court judges to give some guidance.
"There was no intervention when I attended the meeting with the judges, he just conveyed a message to all the Supreme Court judges, Court of Appeal judges, and first instance judges," said Supratman at GOR Soemantri Brodjonegoro on Sunday, February 23, 2025.
The messages conveyed by Prabowo, according to Supratman, were for the judges to uphold justice and defend the weak. "There was nothing else, because they are different chambers."
The Gerindra Party politician stated that Prabowo, as the number one person in Indonesia, wanted the Supreme Court to be part of the trias politica and to realize justice based on public expectations. "That's all, there's nothing else," said Supratman.
It was known that Prabowo summoned all judges in Indonesia to gather at the Presidential Palace, Central Jakarta on Thursday, February 20, 2025. Deputy Coordinator Minister (Wamenko) of Law, Human Rights, Immigration, and Correction Otto Hasibuan said the judges would hear guidance from Prabowo.
On that occasion, Prabowo asked the Supreme Court judges to enforce the law correctly. Upholding just laws is important to support Prabowo's efforts to reclaim the country's natural wealth.
This was conveyed by the Coordinating Minister for Legal, Human Rights, Immigration and Correction Yusril Ihza Mahendra after attending Prabowo's meeting with all Supreme Court judges at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta on Thursday, February 20, 2025.
"The President asked for backup to enforce the law correctly. Because Prabowo will take a rather firm step," said Yusril at the location.
President Prabowo Subianto had previously delivered a speech at the special annual report session of the Indonesian Supreme Court at the Supreme Court building, Central Jakarta on Wednesday, February 19, 2025. At that time, the head of state said that there should no longer be judges who did not have official residences and rented or lived in boarding houses.
Prabowo admitted that he had just realized the heavy burden of judges because every citizen depends on their decisions. "Today, I am convinced again that the quality of life of our judges must be the best. I also received many reports that our judges do not have official residences. Many of our judges are still renting, this should not happen. Is there no finance minister here?" Prabowo said.
The allegation of Prabowo's intervention with the judges was conveyed by constitutional law expert from Andalas University, Feri Amsari.
"Gathering and providing various views from the president to the judicial authority is a form of intervention," said Feri in a voice message sent to Tempo on Friday, February 21, 2025.
Feri said that such forms of intervention had also occurred in the old and new order eras. He assessed that Prabowo's intervention with the Supreme Court judges would seriously damage the constitutional system in Indonesia.
