TEMPO.CO, JakartaPresident Prabowo Subianto has instructed the Indonesian Military (TNI) and the National Police (Polri), in conjunction with regional officials, to enhance security measures around palm oil plantations throughout Indonesia. This directive stems from his belief that Indonesia's palm oil commodities are being actively targeted by foreign nations.

“They really need our palm oil. It turns out that palm oil is a strategic material,” Prabowo said during a speech at the National Development Planning Meeting 2025-2029, which was broadcast online via the Presidential Secretariat's YouTube channel on Monday, December 30, 2024.

The President claimed that he frequently receives requests from other countries during state visits, noting that many nations have high expectations regarding access to Indonesian palm oil. “Many countries are afraid of not getting palm oil,” he said.

Prabowo emphasized that palm oil is a national asset and ordered his staff to bolster security measures to protect this commodity from external interests.

Furthermore, Prabowo urged the government to expand and increase the size of oil palm plantations. “Don't be afraid of deforestation,” he asserted.

According to him, palm oil is derived from trees, which, by virtue of having leaves, absorb carbon dioxide. He also referenced efforts by European countries to restrict palm oil imports from Indonesia.

He dismissed these foreign restrictions, suggesting that they would ultimately create instability within the industrial sectors of the imposing countries.

“Oh, thank you, we don't sell to you (European countries). They panic themselves. Later, all their chocolate industries will be chaotic, and the detergents and cosmetics industries. They are confused themselves, [Indonesia] is fine," Prabowo concluded.
