TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Prabowo Subianto has expressed his intention to evacuate medical workers and educators from Gaza, aiming to help them recover from trauma and enhance their professional skills.
This was conveyed by Ahmad Muzani, Secretary General of Gerindra, following a meeting with Prabowo at the State Palace in Central Jakarta on Tuesday, April 29, 2025.
According to Muzani, strengthening the capabilities of health and education personnel is vital for rebuilding Palestine in the future.
"So that when Palestine is declared free from war, they can return to their homeland in Palestine to together build the future of Palestine," he said.
Muzani also mentioned that Prabowo wishes to evacuate other war-affected groups, including children, women, and people with disabilities, so they can begin their healing process.
As for the countries involved in the potential evacuation, Muzani noted that Prabowo would engage in further discussions with neighboring nations around Palestine, although he did not specify which ones.
Previously, Prabowo had signaled his willingness to accommodate orphans and victims of the conflict in Gaza. He stated that the Indonesian government was prepared to transport up to a thousand refugees in the initial phase of evacuation.
To implement this plan, Prabowo has sought the support of five Middle Eastern countries: the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Turkey, Egypt, Qatar, and Jordan. He emphasized that Indonesia would only proceed if it receives approval from all relevant parties, especially those currently aiding Palestinians in Gaza.
However, both the Turkish government and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia opposed the idea of evacuating Gaza residents to Indonesia. This response came after Prabowo’s diplomatic efforts in the region. Although Saudi Arabia was not among the countries he visited, it also expressed disapproval.
Responding to Turkey’s rejection, State Secretary Minister Prasetyo Hadi said that opposition from certain countries would not halt Indonesia's plans.
"Because the spirit is that we indeed want to help. The fact that there are countries that have not agreed is not a problem. That is why Mr. President also does not rush in making the offer," Prasetyo stated at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta on Monday, April 21, 2025.
He further explained that due to the complex nature of the evacuation, coordination with other nations is essential. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, he added, continues to engage in diplomacy to ensure the plan can be carried out effectively.
Meanwhile, Secretary General of the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI), Amirsyah Tambunan, expressed understanding of President Prabowo’s evacuation proposal but stressed the importance of thorough consideration before moving forward.
"A comprehensive and in-depth study is needed, so that Indonesia is truly ready," he said at the MUI Office in Jakarta on Monday, April 14, 2025.
Amirsyah recalled that Prabowo had proposed relocating orphans and other vulnerable groups even during his tenure as Minister of Defense. However, he acknowledged that the current plan has sparked debate among the public.
"Because it aligns with the relocation idea proposed by President Donald Trump," he said.
He stated that the MUI rejects the plan of Donald Trump who wants to relocate Gaza residents to other countries. He believes that this plan is part of an international crime and is more cruel than ethnic cleansing.
