TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto expressed his desire to understand the limits of being too authoritarian in leadership. This was in response to various criticisms suggesting that he aimed to revive militarism in Indonesia.

Prabowo stated that he is aware of the criticism directed at him for being too authoritarian and appreciates it. "So I am grateful if there are cries of 'Prabowo wants to revive militarism'," he said in Senayan, Jakarta, on Monday, January 5, 2026.

In response to these perceptions, Prabowo expressed his interest in understanding the reasonable limits of leadership. He mentioned wanting to assess whether he was indeed inclined to revive militarism. "I will correct myself, is it true? We will see, consult legal experts, and invite them. Where are the limits of being too authoritarian in leadership?" said the retired Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) general.

On this occasion, Prabowo claimed he had no hesitation in correcting himself and re-evaluating the policies that have been implemented. This is especially when facing criticism from various groups who believe he wants to revive militarism in Indonesia.

Prabowo believes that criticism and correction are essential for his well-being. Therefore, he expressed gratitude when receiving criticism and correction from various parties. According to the President, such criticism and correction indicate that he has been assisted by those who provide such feedback.

"If criticized, we should be grateful. If I am corrected, I consider it as assistance, as being safeguarded. Sometimes, we do not like to be criticized, do not like to be corrected, but actually, it is securing," said Prabowo.

Regardless, the President emphasized that he cannot accept slander and lies, as they can create hatred and division. "Corrections are permitted, criticism is good, but slander is not good. All religions do not permit slander," said the Chair of the Gerindra Party.

Prabowo expressed his stance during a speech at the 2025 National Christmas celebration. The event took place in Senayan, Jakarta, on Monday, January 5, 2026. Prabowo was accompanied by ministers and cabinet officials, including Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka, at the event.
