TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Prabowo Subianto is set to announce the formation of the Police Reform Commission, according to Minister of State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi. The official announcement will be made upon the President's return from his state visit.
"Maybe it will be announced upon the President's return," Prasetyo stated at the Parliament complex in Jakarta on Tuesday, September 23, 2025.
Prasetyo added that the government already has a draft concept for the commission, which will include about nine members from various fields. Mahfud MD, the former Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs, is confirmed to join, along with a former National Police Chief whose name is being kept confidential.
The government's plans have drawn criticism. Usman Hamid, Chair of the Public Virtue Research Institute Governing Council, expressed concern that the proposal lacks a clear purpose. He urged the government to take police reform seriously and to ensure public participation is a key part of the process.
"Public participation should be emphasized in the policy for the reform of the Indonesian National Police currently proposed by the government," Hamid said on Monday, September 22, 2025.
The announcement comes after Prabowo's international schedule. On September 19, he traveled to the United States to attend the 80th General Assembly of the United Nations in New York, where he delivered a speech on Tuesday, September 23.
According to Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya, the president's trip will continue with visits to Canada on September 24 and the Netherlands on September 26. In the Netherlands, he is scheduled to meet with the King and the caretaker Prime Minister.
Dian Rahma contributed to the report.
