TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung delivered his inaugural speech at the plenary meeting of the Jakarta Regional Legislative Council (DPRD). In his speech, Pramono stated that Jakarta remains the capital of Indonesia. He added that Minister of Home Affairs Tito Karnavian and President Prabowo Subianto had also conveyed the same.
"Previously, the Minister of Home Affairs and Bapak President stated that Jakarta remains the capital city," he said at the Jakarta DPRD on Thursday, February 20, 2025.
The former state secretariat minister explained that although Law No. 2 of 2024 has stipulated that Jakarta will no longer be the capital, the implementation of this change is contingent upon the issuance of a presidential decree (Perpres) to formalize the capital relocation.
Until now, the president has not issued a Perpres that regulates capital relocation from Jakarta to Nusantara Capital City (IKN). Therefore, according to Pramono, the designation of Special Capital Region (DKI) Jakarta remains applicable.
Nevertheless, Pramono stated that Jakarta is embarking on a new phase after no longer being the capital. He framed this transition as a challenge because Jakarta has become a global city and no longer competes with domestic regions.
"According to the existing law, Jakarta is expected to be in the global top 20 by 2045, so there must be a collective effort from all of us," he said.
On April 25, 2024, the 7th Indonesian President Joko Widodo signed Law Number 2 of 2024 regarding the Special Region of Jakarta (DKJ Bill). This legislation marked the official shift in Jakarta's capital status.
Suhajar Diantoro, General Secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs, stated that the DKJ Bill tends to develop Jakarta into a global trading hub. This is because the law grants Jakarta many special authorities in the field of trade, as approved in the Plenary Session of the House of Representatives' 14th Session of the IV Legislative Year of 2023-2024.
Suhajar further explained that during its time as the Special Capital Region, Jakarta had developed into a region with advanced trade and economic activity, contributing to more than 17 percent of the national gross domestic product (GDP).
