TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto has proposed that every new school built in the country should include a football field, as part of his broader ambition to strengthen grassroots football development.
The plan was disclosed by Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya in a social media post on Sunday, January 25, 2026.
According to Teddy, the idea was discussed during Prabowo’s meeting with legendary French footballer Zinedine Zidane on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Switzerland.
The meeting, which took place on Thursday, January 22, lasted around 45 minutes and focused on the development of football in Indonesia. Teddy said Prabowo emphasized his strong commitment to advancing the sport and improving the performance of the national team.
“As part of this vision, President Prabowo expressed his plan for every new school to be equipped with a football field,” Teddy said in the Cabinet Secretariat’s post.
He added that the proposed facilities could be used by students and surrounding communities for training and sporting activities, although no further details were provided regarding the implementation or timeline of the plan.
During the discussion, Prabowo also sought Zidane’s views and advice on the development of Indonesian football. Photos shared by the Cabinet Secretary showed the president and the former Real Madrid star seated together in Davos, appearing engaged in conversation, with one image capturing them shaking hands and smiling.
Prabowo attended the World Economic Forum for the first time since taking office as president, succeeding Joko Widodo. At the annual forum, he delivered a special address to international delegations and global business leaders.
The Davos visit was part of Prabowo’s broader overseas agenda this week, which also included meetings with United Kingdom Prime Minister Keir Starmer and King Charles III in London, as well as French President Emmanuel Macron in Paris.
Prabowo’s stop in France was brief, lasting less than five hours. He returned to Indonesia shortly afterward, arriving at Halim Perdanakusuma Air Base in Jakarta on Saturday evening, January 24, 2026.
