TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Russian President Vladimir Putin urged Iranian President Iran Masoud Pezeshkian to end hostilities in the Middle East during a phone conversation on Friday. As reported by Xinhua and cited by Antara, the Kremlin reported that Putin pressed for an immediate end to hostilities in the Middle East.

In the phone call, Putin expressed his condolences for the passing of Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, members of his family, representatives from the country's military and political leadership, and the numerous civilian casualties as a result of the armed aggression by the United States and Israel against Iran.

Putin reiterated Russia's principled position that hostilities must be ended promptly and the use of violence to resolve issues in Iran and throughout the Middle East must cease, while calling for political and diplomatic efforts to be resumed to resolve the conflict, according to the Kremlin.

Putin also mentioned that he continues to maintain contact with the leaders of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries regarding the situation.

Meanwhile, Pezeshkian thanked Russia for standing with the Iranian people in defending their homeland's sovereignty and independence. He also gave Putin a detailed explanation of the current phase of the conflict.

Both sides agreed to continue contacts through various channels, the Kremlin disclosed.
