TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Russian President Vladimir Putin reiterated his support for a rapid de-escalation of the ongoing conflict involving Tehran and emphasized resolving it through political means during a phone call with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Tuesday, according to the Kremlin.
A statement said the two leaders continued discussions on the situation in the Middle East, particularly regarding the joint US-Israel attacks on Iran.
“The Russian President reaffirmed his principled position in favor of a swift de-escalation of the conflict and its resolution through political means. Masoud Pezeshkian thanked Russia for its support, particularly for providing humanitarian aid to Iran,” the statement read, as reported by Anadolu.
This was the second conversation between the two presidents since early March, following a previous call last Friday.
Regional tensions escalated after Israel and the United States launched a joint strike on Iran on February 28, killing over 1,200 people to date, including Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Tehran responded with drone and missile attacks targeting Israel and Gulf countries hosting US military assets, disrupting global markets.
Putin also spoke with US President Donald Trump on Monday to discuss the Iran conflict as well as the situation in Ukraine, calling for a “quick political and diplomatic settlement” to the crisis, according to a presidential aide.
