Ramadan Across the Globe: Cities with the Longest and Shortest Fasting Hours

2 hours ago 9

TEMPO.CO, JakartaRamadan is a sacred month for Muslims worldwide, marked by fasting from sunrise to sunset. However, fasting hours vary across countries due to geography and the sun’s position, influencing day length.

In many places, fasting lasts around 13 hours. But in some regions, Muslims observe Ramadan for over 17 hours—sometimes longer—depending on sunrise and sunset times. Areas at higher latitudes, especially when Ramadan falls in summer, experience significantly longer fasting hours.

According to Al-Jazeera, Muslims in the world’s southernmost countries, such as Chile and New Zealand, will fast for about 12 hours. Meanwhile, those in northernmost countries like Iceland and Greenland will endure over 17 hours daily.

Cities with the Longest Fasting Hours

Some locations face extreme fasting durations, requiring strong physical and mental endurance. In 2024, Nuuk, Greenland, tops the list with nearly 18 hours of fasting per day.

Here are eight cities with the longest fasting times:

1. Nuuk, Greenland – 17 hours 52 minutes

2. Helsinki, Finland – 17 hours 9 minutes

3. Oslo, Norway – 16 hours 54 minutes

4. Madrid, Spain – 16 hours

5. Paris, France – 15 hours

6. London, UK – 14 hours 55 minutes

7. Istanbul, Turkey – 14 hours 30 minutes

8. Gaza City, Palestine – 14 hours

Cities with the Shortest Fasting Hours

Meanwhile, in the Southern Hemisphere, fasting durations are much shorter. These cities have the briefest fasting periods:

1. Christchurch, New Zealand – 12 hours 42 minutes

2. Puerto Montt, Chile – 12 hours 43 minutes

3. Canberra, Australia – 12 hours 46 minutes

4. Montevideo, Uruguay – 12 hours 47 minutes

5. Johannesburg, South Africa – 12 hours 52 minutes

What About Indonesia?

In Southeast Asia, including Indonesia and Malaysia, fasting lasts around 13 hours—moderate compared to other regions.
