TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A researcher from Gadjah Mada University (UGM) has warned that so-called “super flu” cases in Indonesia need close monitoring, even though the virus has not shown signs of increased severity.

Tri Wibawa, a microbiology lecturer and researcher at UGM’s Faculty of Medicine, Public Health, and Nursing in Yogyakarta, said super flu (an informal term used to describe the Influenza A subclade K variant) remains potentially dangerous, particularly for vulnerable groups.

His remarks follow the detection of dozens of cases nationwide, with the highest numbers reported in East Java, South Kalimantan, and West Java.

“Although this virus does not appear to cause more severe illness, its potential to develop into a pandemic must be closely monitored,” Tri said on Friday, January 9, 2026.

Whole genome sequencing (WGS) data show that the variant has been circulating since August 2025. As of December 2025, authorities had confirmed 62 cases across Indonesia. One death linked to super flu was reported at Hasan Sadikin Hospital in Bandung, West Java.

Tri explained that the Influenza A subclade K variant has genetic differences from previously circulating influenza viruses, although it is still believed to be related to seasonal flu strains commonly affecting the public.

He noted that influenza viruses naturally mutate over time due to the characteristics of their RNA-based genetic material. These gradual genetic changes can result in new but closely related variants.

“With rapid viral changes and the emergence of new variants that are significantly different, there is a risk that the human immune system may respond less effectively, potentially allowing faster transmission,” Tri said.

Despite these concerns, Tri stressed that there is currently no evidence of unusual viral evolution. He said no laboratory or population-based studies have shown that the super flu variant can evade immunity developed from previous influenza infections or vaccinations.

“So far, there are no specific findings indicating immune escape,” he said. “However, we must remain cautious, as influenza can still have fatal consequences for vulnerable individuals.”

Tri urged the public to continue basic preventive measures, including proper cough etiquette, wearing masks when experiencing flu-like symptoms, regular handwashing, adequate rest, and good indoor ventilation. He also emphasized that vaccination remains important for high-risk groups.

“Vaccination is still recommended for vulnerable populations, such as children, older adults, pregnant women, and people with chronic illnesses,” he said.
