TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The recognition of Palestine statehood by several countries at the 80th UN General Assembly sends "extremely important" signal to Israel, according to Russia's Permanent Representative to the UN, Vassily Nebenzia, on Tuesday.
He mentioned that the UN has failed to stop the bloodshed in Gaza or compel Israel to return to the path of two-state solution.
But over the past two days, he said, during the international conference at the UN General Assembly, significant symbolic steps have been taken by several major countries in recognizing Palestinian independence.
"This is a belated but extremely important signal to Israel's military and poIitical leadership that justice for the Palestinian people must be restored," Nebenzia addressed UN Security Council as reported by Sputnik and cited by Antara.
Previously, Russia reiterated its belief that the two-state solution is the only way to resolve the conflict in the Middle East region. This was expressed by the Kremlin on Monday, after being asked about the decision of some Western countries to recognize the state of Palestine.
"We remain committed to the fundamental resolutions of the U.N. Security Council and remain committed to the international position on the possibility of resolving the Palestinian-Israeli problem on the basis of a two-state approach," said Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov to reporters.
"This remains our approach, and we believe that it is the only possible way to find a solution to this extremely complex, long-standing conflict, which is now perhaps at its most acute and tragic stage in its entire history."
On Monday, several European countries such as Andorra, Belgium, Luxembourg, Malta, San Marino, and France recognized the State of Palestine during a conference held on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York.
They followed a similar move made earlier by Australia, UK, Canada, and Portugal on September 21. This decision was born out of frustration over the Gaza war, which has killed more than 65,380 Palestinian civilians, and is intended to promote the two-state solution policy.
A sovereign Palestinian state is now recognized by more than 150 countries, including Russia. In 2024, the United States vetoed full Palestinian membership in the UN.
