TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Philippine government was said to be preparing at least 7,000 police officers on Monday to arrest former President Rodrigo Duterte. They were reported to have been on standby in Davao City, Duterte's hometown, and the capital of Manila.
As reported by The Manila Times, an anonymous source stated that the Philippine government is currently preparing a plan for Duterte's arrest as a result of Interpol's red notice.
A red notice is a request to law enforcement worldwide to locate and provisionally arrest a person pending extradition, surrender, or similar legal action.
The International Criminal Court (ICC) has been investigating Duterte and several other officials in his government for alleged crimes against humanity in the Philippine police's anti-narcotics operations. Thousands of Filipinos were reported to have died as a result of Duterte's anti-drug operations.
However, as reported by Reuters, the ICC Prosecutor's Office neither confirmed nor denied reports that an arrest warrant had been issued against former President Duterte.
Meanwhile, Duterte said in Hong Kong that he is prepared for the possibility of being arrested by Interpol.
In a Facebook post, his former spokesperson said Duterte is expected to return to Manila from Hong Kong on Tuesday, March 11, 2025. He was in Hong Kong to speak at a public campaign rally attended by thousands of Filipino workers, hoping to garner support for his senatorial candidates in the upcoming Philippine midterm elections.
"Assuming it's (warrant) true, why did I do it? For myself? For my family? For you and your children, and for our nation," Duterte said at the rally, reaffirming his anti-narcotics campaign.
"If this is truly my fate in life, it's okay, I will accept it. They can arrest me, imprison me. What is my sin? I did everything in my time for peace and a peaceful life for the Filipino people," he told the cheering crowd at the Southorn Stadium in Hong Kong.
He appeared alongside his daughter, Vice President of the Philippines Sara Duterte. A Hong Kong police unit to protect VIPs was deployed around the hotel where Duterte was staying, a Reuters journalist said.
The "war on drugs" is a campaign policy that brought Duterte to power in 2016 from a crime-busting mayor. He fulfilled a campaign promise during the Philippine presidential race to kill thousands of drug dealers.
Current Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr said on Monday that they had not received any official communication from Interpol, but indicated that Duterte could be turned over.
"Our law enforcers are ready to follow what law dictates, if the warrant of arrest needs to be served because of a request from Interpol," Deputy Presidential Communications Minister Claire Castro told reporters.
