TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Russia has attacked Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine, with hundreds of drones. The attack was carried out prior to the largest prisoner exchange on Sunday, May 25, 2025.
As reported by CBS News, several hours before the prisoner exchange, the capital of Ukraine and other regions were targeted by Russian drones and missiles. At least 12 people were killed and dozens more were injured.
Russia attacked Ukraine with 367 drones and missiles, marking the largest single aerial attack in the war that has lasted for over three years, according to Yuriy Ihnat, a spokesperson for the Ukrainian Air Force. Overall, Russia used 69 various types of missiles and 298 drones, including the Iranian-designed Shahed drones.
There has been no direct comment from Moscow regarding the attack.
U.S. President Donald Trump told reporters on Sunday, May 25, 2025, that he would consider imposing further sanctions on Russia for the attack. "I'm not happy with what Putin is doing. He's killing a lot of people, and I don't know what the hell happened to Putin," said Trump.
"I've known him a long time. Always gotten along with him, but he's sending rockets into cities and killing people, and I don't like it at all. Okay, we're in the middle of talking, and he's shooting rockets into Kyiv and other cities. I don't like it at all. I'm surprised. I'm very surprised," Trump said.
On Sunday night, Trump wrote on social media that he always had a very good relationship with Putin. "But something has happened to him. He has gone absolutely CRAZY!" said Trump.
Trump stated that Putin is killing many people for no reason. He said that missiles and drones were fired at Ukrainian cities for no reason.
Trump warned that if Putin wants to take control of the whole of Ukraine, then Russia will fall. However, Trump also criticized Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. He said Zelensky is not helping Ukraine because of the way he speaks. "Everything out of his mouth causes problems, I don't like it, and it better stop," Trump wrote on social media.
Zelensky stated that Russian missiles and drones hit more than 30 cities and villages. He urged Western allies to increase sanctions against Russia.
"These were deliberate strikes on ordinary cities," Zelensky said on social media. He added that the targets of the attacks on Sunday included the areas of Kyiv, Zhytomyr, Khmelnytskyi, Ternopil, Chernihiv, Sumy, Odesa, Poltava, Dnipro, Mykolaiv, Kharkiv, and Cherkasy.
"Without truly strong pressure on the Russian leadership, this brutality cannot be stopped. Sanctions will certainly help," said Zelensky. "Determination matters now — the determination of the United States, of European countries, and of all those around the world who seek peace."
The Russian Ministry of Defense stated that its air defense shot down 110 Ukrainian drones overnight. Despite the scale of the use of Russian air weapons, the attacks over the past 48 hours are among the most intense attacks on Ukraine since the February 2022 invasion.
The Russian Ministry of Defense quoted Yaroslav Yakimkin from the northern Russian forces group as saying on Sunday that Ukrainian forces had been pushed back from the border in the Kursk region. Putin had visited Kursk a few days ago.
