TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Russia will soon send Ukraine a draft peace memorandum outlining the main principles of potential conflict resolution. On Tuesday, Maria Zakharova, the spokesperson for the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, conveyed this.
In her weekly press conference in Makhachkala, Republic of Dagestan, Russia, Zakharova said Moscow continues to develop its draft memorandum on a future peace deal between Russia and Ukraine, as quoted by Anadolu.
Zakharova said the draft will define several positions, such as principles for potential resolution, a timeframe for possible peaceful agreement, and the potential of a ceasefire for a certain period if "appropriate agreements are reached."
She said once completed, the memorandum will be sent to Kyiv. She added that Russia hopes Ukraine will prepare its draft to be sent in response.
She stated that the process surrounding the agreement reached during direct talks between Russia and Ukraine in Istanbul earlier this month is "difficult" due to Kyiv's position. She even accused Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky of trying to hinder "emerging peaceful progress."
On May 19, U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin held a phone call for over two hours to discuss efforts to achieve a ceasefire in the Russia-Ukraine war.
In the phone call, Putin conveyed that Moscow would propose and is ready to work with Kyiv to create a memorandum regarding the potential for a peaceful agreement.
Meanwhile, Zelensky said the two countries could sign a memorandum including provisions for a ceasefire. He noted that its contents are still unknown, but Kyiv will be able to formulate its vision after receiving Russia's draft.
