TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio met with Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia, Mohammed bin Salman, on Monday, February 17, 2025. Spokesperson for the U.S. Department of State, Tammy Bruce, stated that they discussed plans for Gaza as proposed by President Donald Trump.
"The Secretary underscored the importance of an arrangement for Gaza that contributes to regional security," the spokesperson said while reading the results of the meeting between Rubio and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman as cited by Reuters.
Rubio is visiting the Middle East after President Donald Trump angered the Arab world. Trump proposed that the Palestinian population in the war-torn region be resettled in other Arab countries and for the U.S. to lead the reconstruction efforts in the enclave.
Rubio and Mohammed bin Salman reconfirmed their commitment to the ceasefire agreed upon last month between Israel and Hamas. They also discussed Syria, Lebanon, and the Red Sea, Bruce said.
The Saudi government news agency SPA stated that Rubio and Prince MBS discussed regional and global developments as well as efforts to achieve security and stability.
Rubio arrived in Saudi Arabia on Monday after visiting Israel. This is his first visit to the region as a senior U.S. diplomat. Rubio's visit comes ahead of a meeting between U.S. officials and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. The U.S. and Russia will discuss issues regarding stopping the war in Ukraine and restoring the relationship between the two countries.
