TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Game developer Scopely has announced its acquisition of several game, application, and live experience businesses owned by game developer Niantic for US$3.5 billion, equivalent to Rp572.6 trillion.

Scopely is a subsidiary of Savvy Games Group, a gaming company backed by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund.

Scopely has acquired games like Pokémon GO, Pikmin Bloom, and Monster Hunter Now.

“Scopely has always been focused on cultivating meaningful communities through a shared love of play, and the Niantic games organization is one of the best in the world at this endeavor,” said Scopely's Chief Revenue Officer and Board Member, Tim O'Brien, in a statement on Scopely's website on Wednesday, March 12, 2025.

According to Scopely, Pokémon GO has been one of the biggest games, with 20 million active players weekly and being in the top 10 game titles since its launch in 2016. This phone-based augmented reality game has collectively explored over 30 billion miles with all users.

The game has reached over 190 countries and territories, bringing together a fan community with an average playtime of 40 minutes per day.

Scopely has considered various opportunities for user community enthusiasm, as seen in the 2024 Pokémon GO Fest, which sold two million tickets and saw participants capturing over 150 million Pokémon.

“Few games in the world have delivered the scale and longevity of Pokémon GO, which reached over 100 million players just last year. The experience also stands apart for its unique ability to foster in-person connections, with Pokémon GO live events attracting millions of attendees," said Tim O'Brien.

Niantic’s entire gamemaking team, including veteran leaders Kei Kawai and Ed Wu, will join over 2,300 Scopeleans worldwide to keep building and running the experiences players love.

"Most importantly, we’ll remain focused on the excitement and experience of discovering Pokémon in the real world," said Ed Wu.

Niantic's Founder and Chief Executive Officer John Hanke said that Scopely shares the same focus as Niantic in leveraging and building games along with user experiences. He believes this partnership is beneficial for players and also assures that Niantic's games have long-term investment support to persist through future generations.

“Niantic games have always been a bridge to connect people and inspire exploration, and I am confident they will continue to do both as part of Scopely," said Hanke.
