TEMPO.CO, JakartaSega does not want to be left behind in pursuing the subscription game player market. Sega President and Chief Operating Officer (COO) Shuji Utsumi said that his company is considering the service scheme according to the growing trend. However, Sega has not yet openly announced plans for a Netflix-style subscription product.

"We are thinking and discussing something that we cannot reveal right now," said Utsumi, quoted from several Game Rant reviews on Sunday, December 29, 2024.

Previous subscription service schemes have been worked on by major players, such as Sony Interactive Entertainment through Playstation Plus, and Microsoft through Xbox Game Pass. Customers must pay a monthly or annual fee to access various game series, instead of buying them. Other game manufacturers, ranging from Nintendo, Electronic Arts (EA), and Ubisoft also offer subscription packages for fans looking for some classic games.

Sega has recently removed a number of classic games available on various platforms such as PC, Xbox, and PlayStation. Some of the titles removed are the Sega Genesis Classics collection, such as Sonic the Fighters, Virtua Fighter 2, and various other games. Referring to Game Rant's review, this move is suspected to be Sega's way of uniting its product collections under one umbrella service. This unification is considered more profitable for the company.

Fans have not received any certainty from Sega regarding the opportunity to develop subscription games. However, Utsumi ensured that the company is evaluating and exploring the opportunities that can be obtained from the scheme.

On the one hand, the subscription scheme has actually raised concerns among Sega game fans. So far, various Sega games can be played through Xbox or Playstation subscription access. The discourse on developing a subscription itself has the potential to make Sega's game lineup disappear from platforms provided by competing companies.

The Growth and Development of Subscription Games

The subscription trend continues to grow and increasingly competes with the game shopping market. Microsoft initiated this scheme through the game pass product in 2017. With a service priced at US$10—equivalent to Rp161,000 at this time—fans can access hundreds of Xbox games and PC games owned by the entity. With the growing price range, there are already 34 million Xbox Game Pass subscribers as of February 2024.

Sony then followed with Playstation Plus Deluxe in May 2022. However, the choice of subscription games provided by Sony at that time was much less than the Xbox Game Pass. In fact, the initial price of PS Plus access reached Rp1.5 million.

Subscription account holders can download various PS and Xbox games freely. To boost the subscription market, Sony and Microsoft have also published several games that can only be played via subscription access. The subscription scheme provides wider access for customers. However, this service is not suitable for individuals who have limited playing time. The advantages and disadvantages of this game subscription scheme can be read more fully in Tempo Premium Report, August 30, 2022 Edition: Hemat Anggaran Setelah Berlangganan (Save Budget After Subscribing).
