TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Dubai has set new standards in sustainable tourism through various innovative initiatives. These include Dubai Can, Dubai Sustainable Tourism or DST Stamp, and Dubai Reef. These groundbreaking programs serve Dubai's commitment to preserving natural resources while enhancing the tourist experience.
All three programs focus on environmental responsibility across various sectors, including the hotel industry, waste reduction, and marine conservation. Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Deputy Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates, has launched Dubai Can. This program has successfully reduced the use of more than 30 million single-use plastic bottles over the past three years.
The initiatives include Refill for Life, which has provided 15 million liters of water through 53 refill stations to support sustainable consumption. The program continues to expand with redesigned refill stations equipped with advanced technology, providing users with an enhanced user experience. With the UAE consuming 4 billion plastic bottles annually, Dubai Can is promoting a refill culture to prevent millions of bottles from ending up in landfills or polluting the oceans.
Yousuf Lootah, CEO of Strategy and Corporate Performance at DET, stated that Dubai Can has significantly reduced the consumption of single-use plastics and promoted a more responsible consumer culture. "With continued support, we remain committed to promoting sustainable behavior and strengthening Dubai's position as a leading eco-friendly tourist destination," he said in a written statement.

Dubai Reef, the second major project under Dubai Can, is the world's largest artificial coral reef development project. The deployment phase of Dubai Reef was inaugurated in November 2024, with the distribution of 20,000 artificial coral reef modules of various sizes in Dubai's waters. The project aims to support global conservation efforts by enhancing marine biodiversity, protecting Dubai's coastal habitats and oceans, sustaining fish populations, and significantly strengthening ecosystem resilience.
Meanwhile, Dubai Sustainable Tourism, which recognizes 153 hotels for their commitment to sustainability, has seen a 118 percent increase over last year. This reflects the growing efforts of Dubai's hotel sector in prioritizing sustainability and reinforcing Dubai's reputation as an eco-friendly destination.
Hotel evaluation is based on 19 sustainability criteria, including energy efficiency, water conservation, and waste management. Eighteen hotels achieved Gold status, including Atlantis The Palm, Jumeirah Al Qasr, and Grosvenor House, while 64 hotels achieved Silver status and 71 hotels achieved Bronze status. Third-party assessments ensure that these hotels adhere to Dubai's sustainability standards.
"Receiving the Gold DST Stamp award reflects our commitment to responsible hospitality and Dubai's vision for sustainable tourism. We will continue to enhance our eco-friendly initiatives to support a greener future for the city," said Peter Roth, Regional Vice President of Madinat Jumeirah and General Manager of Jumeirah Al Qasr.
