Seven Israeli Soldiers Killed in Gaza's Khan Younis, Military Confirms

2 months ago 121

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Israeli military announced on Wednesday, June 25, 2025, that seven soldiers were killed by an explosive device in Khan Younis, southern Gaza, on the previous day.

As reported by I24News, this is the highest death toll in a single incident in Gaza for the Israeli military since the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas ended in March. This serves as a reminder of the ongoing conflict in Gaza following the two-week Israel-Iran war that garnered global attention.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) reported that during the incident in central Khan Younis, a Palestinian militant approached a Puma armored personnel carrier (APC) carrying the seven soldiers. The attacker planted an explosive device on the vehicle before fleeing. The device later detonated, igniting the APC and killing all seven soldiers inside.

Hamas's armed wing, the Qassam Brigades, stated on Telegram that they had targeted Israeli troops in Khan Younis on Tuesday. However, it remains unclear whether they were referring to the same attack that killed the seven soldiers.

The conflict in Gaza escalated following the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack that left around 1,200 Israelis dead and approximately 250 taken hostage. Israel's subsequent military response has led to the deaths of more than 57,000 Palestinians in Gaza, most of whom were women and children.

The deadliest single day for Israeli forces since the conflict began was in January 2024, when 24 soldiers were killed, including 20 in one explosion.

Despite ongoing indirect negotiations between Israel and Hamas over a new ceasefire and the release of hostages, both sides have failed to reach a lasting agreement.

Progress has stalled over demands for a permanent ceasefire. Hamas insists on a total end to the war, while Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has rejected the terms of a previous ceasefire agreement brokered under U.S. President Joe Biden’s administration.

Meanwhile, Palestinians in Gaza continue to face extreme shortages of food, fuel, and medical supplies due to the Israeli blockade on aid. For nearly three months earlier this year, humanitarian assistance was almost entirely blocked from entering the enclave.

Since mid-May, Israel has claimed to allow limited supplies into Gaza through a new U.S.-backed distribution mechanism. Israeli officials say this system prevents aid from reaching Hamas, but it has been criticized for worsening the humanitarian crisis.

The system has been referred to as a "Hunger Games" scenario, as Israeli forces have shot Palestinian civilians approaching the distribution sites operated by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF). These incidents have drawn condemnation from the United Nations and other international organizations.

Of the roughly 50 hostages taken during the October 2023 attack, Israeli authorities believe about 20 are still alive, while the rest are presumed dead. The families of the hostages continue to press for their safe return, describing their condition as life-threatening.

Both Palestinian civilians and the families of Israeli hostages are hoping that the ceasefire reached between Israel and Iran on Tuesday will lead to a similar truce in Gaza.
