TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Former Indonesian National Team coach, Shin Tae-yong or STY, officially left Indonesia on Sunday night, January 26, 2025. His return to his home country, South Korea, was accompanied by a number of Indonesian National Team supporters. They said goodbye before the tactician flew from Soekarno-Hatta Airport, Tangerang, Banten.
"I am truly grateful to be accompanied home like this on this journey home. I am very touched and very grateful," said Shin Tae-yong to the media upon arriving at Soekarno-Hatta Airport.
Before his return, Shin Tae-yong took the time to visit the residence of the Minister of Youth and Sports of the Republic of Indonesia (Menpora RI) Dito Ariotedjo on Jl. Denpasar Raya, Jakarta. He conveyed a message that he loved Indonesia after five years of managing the Indonesian national football team.
"After five years, I will return to Korea. To football fans and the people of Indonesia, I express my deepest gratitude. Even though I have to go back, I love Indonesia," said Shin Tae-yong, quoted from the Kemenpora page.
Shin Tae-yong was officially dismissed as the coach of the Indonesian National Team on Monday, January 6, 2025. The announcement was made by the General Chairman of the All Indonesia Football Association (PSSI) Erick Thohir. Now the position of coach of the Indonesian National Team is held by Patrick Kluivert, a tactician from the Netherlands.
FIFA Ranking of the Indonesian National Team Before & After Being Coached by Shin Tae-yong
Shin Tae-yong has been coaching the Garuda Squad since January 8, 2020, when he replaced Simon McMenemy. He is recorded as the most successful coach of the Indonesian National Team even though he did not contribute a title. One of his achievements is, for almost five years or 1,825 days as a tactician, he managed to raise the FIFA ranking of the Indonesian National Team from 173 to 127.
Based on the history of the FIFA ranking, the Indonesian National Team was once recorded as occupying a FIFA ranking above 100, namely in 1997 to 2001 and 2003 to 2004. Indonesia's best FIFA ranking record so far is 87th in 1998 and 2001. Although he has not been able to match that record, Shin Tae-yong has been relatively more successful in increasing the ranking of the Indonesian National Team compared to other coaches.
In comparison, Peter Withe, who was the longest coach of the Indonesian National Team (1,113 days) before Shin Tae-yong, actually failed to increase the FIFA ranking of the Garuda Squad. In early 2004—when Peter Withe was first appointed as coach—Indonesia was ranked 91st in the world. Then, the FIFA ranking of the Indonesian National Team at the end of 2006—towards the end of Peter Withe's coaching—was actually at 153.
Not only the FIFA ranking, under Shin Tae-yong's leadership, the Indonesian national team won 26 out of a total of 57 matches played, resulting in a win rate of 46 percent. On the other hand, despite leaving without a title, Shin Tae-yong's presence has succeeded in showing the Garuda Squad's performance on the international stage.
Here are Shin Tae-yong's achievements while coaching the Indonesian National Team:
1. Runner-up of the 2020 AFF Cup
2. Bronze medal of the 2021 SEA Games
3. Runner-up of the 2023 AFF U-23 Cup
4. Qualified for the 2023 U-20 Asian Cup
5. Last 16 of the 2023 Asian Cup
6. Fourth place in the 2024 U-23 Asian Cup
7. Qualified for the third round of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers
8. Qualified for the 2027 Asian Cup
9. Boosting Indonesia's ranking in the FIFA list, from 173 to 129.
