TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A Singapore court on Monday, February 17, 2025, found the Workers' Party chief, Pritam Singh, guilty of two charges for lying to parliament.
Singh received two fines of S$7,000 ($5,231), which were below the threshold of S$10,000 per offense outlined in the constitution for a lawmaker to lose their seat and be barred from public office for five years. Singh said he would appeal the decision.
Singh, 48, was charged with giving false testimony to a parliamentary committee in Singapore in 2021 regarding a Workers' Party member who was alleged to have lied to the committee. Singapore's Prime Minister Lawrence Wong said last month that a committee had been formed to review election rules, indicating that Singapore's election is imminent.
The People's Action Party, the party that propelled Wong to the position of Prime Minister, is predicted to dominate the election and win the majority of parliament seats, as it has since Singapore's independence in 1965. In the 2025 election, the party receiving the most votes will serve as a barometer for Wong to gain public approval for his policies.
In the 2020 election, the People's Action Party had its worst election result despite still triumphing over the opposition, securing 83 out of 93 parliamentary seats. Meanwhile, the opposition exceeded expectations by obtaining 10 seats.
The People's Action Party has dominated Singapore's political stage since the country's independence in 1965. The party has played a significant role in developing Singapore into a city-state and one of the global financial and trading centers.
