TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Several South Korean television stations have canceled the broadcast of entertainment programs to honor the victims of the Boeing 737-800 plane crash, owned by Jeju Air at Muan International Airport, Jeollanam-do on Sunday, December 29, 2024.

Reported by Chosun Biz, according to the Jeollanam-do Fire Department, of the 181 people on board the plane, 2 are believed to have survived, while 179 others died.

Quoted from Antara, the tragic accident had an impact on the South Korean entertainment industry. Several television stations canceled their entertainment programs to provide special reports and developments regarding the accident. Here is a list of canceled programs:

1. MBC

Several MBC entertainment programs were canceled, one of which was the 2024 MBC Entertainment Awards which was supposed to take place at 20:30 South Korean time. Reported by Sports Chosun, this decision came after MBC previously only deleted the photo session at 19:00.

"We hope that viewers can understand this decision," said an MBC representative in an official statement. In addition, the Start! program Video Travel (12:10 p.m.) and King of Mask Singer (6:00 p.m.) were also canceled.

The year-end music festival, MBC Gayo Daejejeon, which was broadcast live from New Year's Eve to New Year's, has completed some pre-recordings. However, the organizers decided to postpone the event that was scheduled to air on Tuesday, December 31, 2024.

2. KBS

In addition to MBC, KBS also announced the cancellation of a number of its programs. Some of the mainstay weekend programs that were canceled include: TV Show Genuine Article, National Singing Contest, 2 Days & 1 Night Season 4, Gag Concert, The Ddanddara, Boss in the Mirror.

A KBS official also stated that they switched to an emergency special report system to provide the latest information on the national disaster situation, "We are canceling entertainment and comedy programs out of respect for public sentiment and the social atmosphere related to this tragedy," he said, quoted from Maeil Business Newspaper.

3. SBS

SBS's mainstay program, Animal Farm, was also canceled. As of now, SBS is still evaluating schedule changes for other programs.

With the Jeju Air accident, several award shows have also not announced the latest information regarding cancellations. MBC is scheduled to hold the Drama Awards on Monday, December 30, 2024, while KBS and SBS are each planning the Drama and Entertainment Awards on Tuesday, December 31, 2024.
