TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Squid Game 2 breaks record for most first-week viewers in Netflix history. The sequel to the Korean series by director Hwang Dong Hyuk overtook Wednesday, which previously held the record.
According to Netflix's report on Wednesday, January 1, 2025, Squid Game 2 topped the Global Top 10 non-English TV with 68 million views. Squid Game 2 also broke the record for most viewers for a show in its first week of release. The record was previously held by the first season of Wednesday starring Jenna Ortega in November 2022 with 50.1 million views.
Squid Game 2 Dominates 92 Countries
Squid Game 2 is listed at No. 1 in 92 of the 93 countries listed in the Netflix rankings for the period 23-29 December 2024. Reported by The Hollywood Reporter, the only country that differs is the United States, where Squid Game 2 is behind two NFL Christmas Day games.
"Since its release on December 26, Squid Game 2 has become the seventh most popular non-English TV show on Netflix in a short time, Squid Game Season 1 remains at the top with 265.2 million views," said Netflix's official statement.
Reported by Collider, if the viewing figures remain stable, the Squid Game 2 series can continue to rise or will occupy the top ranking by itself. This proves that fans of this series are still loyal to following the story of Squid Game, even allowing the emergence of new fans who are curious about Squid Game.
Increasing Viewers of Squid Game Season 1
The launch of Squid Game 2 dragged Squid Game season one back into the list of non-English language series on Netflix. This week Squid Game (2021) ranked third with 8.1 million views worldwide. It is recorded that the first season of Squid Game received 265.2 million views in the first 91 days. Meanwhile, Squid Game 2 has achieved more than 25 percent of the stated number.
In Squid Game, the audience is presented with Gi Hun's (Lee Jung Jae) life-or-death efforts to emerge as the winner. The second season tells the story of Gi Hun who has devised a plan to avenge himself on the people who made more than 400 contestants kill each other for entertainment. However, he is once again at risk of being killed by guards or even other contestants.
Squid Game 3 to Air in 2025
On Wednesday, January 1, 2025, Netflix officially announced that Squid Game 3 would be released in 2025. Along with that, the Squid Game 3 poster was also launched. A doll identical to the Red Light, Green Light game named Young Hee adorns the poster. Beside him stands a male version of Young Hee's doll named Cheol Su.
Cheol Su's character was previously introduced by Hwang Dong Hyuk when he announced Squid Game would be getting a second season in June 2022. "Join us once again for a whole new chapter," he wrote in a message shared on Netflix's official account. "You'll also be introduced to Young Hee's boyfriend, Cheol Su."
