TEMPO.COJakarta - The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) has provided an updated count of the victims following the ecological disaster that struck Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra.

Abdul Muhari, Head of the Data, Information, and Disaster Communication Center of BNPB, reported that the death toll from the widespread floods and landslides across Sumatra Island had reached 836 as of Thursday, December 4, 2025, at 4:00 PM WIB.

"I report that as of this afternoon, the number of fatalities has increased to 836," he stated during a virtual press conference broadcast via BNPB's YouTube channel.

The official report also indicates that 518 people were declared missing, and 2,700 people were injured.

Casualties by Province

BNPB detailed the fatalities and missing persons for each affected province. In Aceh Province, the number of confirmed fatalities reached 325, while 170 people remain unaccounted for. In North Sumatra, 311 people have been found dead and 127 are missing. Concurrently, in West Sumatra, 200 people have perished, and 221 people are still unaccounted for.

Extensive Damage Reported

Based on BNPB's Indonesia Disaster Data Geoportal (accessed at 6:00 p.m. WIB), a total of 51 districts/cities across Sumatra Island have been affected by this ecological disaster. At least 10,500 houses have been reported damaged. Substantial damage was also recorded for public infrastructure, including 536 public facilities, 25 health facilities, 326 educational facilities, 185 places of worship, 115 buildings or offices, and 295 bridges destroyed by the floods and landslides. 

Ongoing Search and Aid Operations

The search and rescue (SAR) operation remains active. BNPB is working alongside a joint team comprising the Indonesian National Defense Forces (TNI), the National Police, the National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas), and various volunteers. The distribution of aid to affected communities is also still ongoing.
