TEMPO.CO, Jakarta At least 14 people have been confirmed dead and 124 others reported missing in Taiwan after Super Typhoon Ragasa brought heavy rainfall, mostly affecting the eastern part of the island, according to local authorities on Wednesday, September 24, 2025 as reported by Antara.
Most of the dead were elderly residents found deceased on the ground floor of their homes in Guangfu City, Hualien.
They are believed to have been unable to evacuate before the floods hit, according to reports from local media citing the local fire department.
A barrier lake in Hualien, a region on the east coast, overflowed, causing downstream flooding and forcing residents to seek emergency assistance.
The area around the barrier, formed decades ago due to landslides, is expected to receive 700 to 800 millimeters of rain over a four-day period until Thursday, September 25, 2025.
More than 30 people were also reported injured as Typhoon Ragasa—the 18th typhoon of this season—passed through the southern region of Taiwan without making landfall.
Interior Minister Liu Shyh-fang said on late Tuesday that the barrier lake overflow had damaged public facilities and residents' homes.
The minister ordered relevant agencies to promptly conduct rescue operations, restore services, and provide aid to allow the people of Hualien to return to normal activities as soon as possible.
