TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia's Supreme Court has increased the punishment for former CEO of PT Pertamina Galaila Karen Kardinah, also known as Karen Agustiawan.
The former Pertamina boss was involved in a corruption case related to the procurement of liquefied natural gas (LNG).
"Imprisonment for 13 years," reads an excerpt from the court decision, quoted from the website of the Supreme Court on Friday, February 28, 2025. This punishment is heavier than the previous nine years in prison.
In addition, the cassation judges also imposed a fine of Rp650 million on Karen. If she is unable to pay, she will be imprisoned for six months.
The cassation judges found that Karen Agustiawan was proven to have violated Article 3 of Law Number 31 of 1999 concerning the Eradication of Corruption Crimes as amended by Law Number 20 of 2001 (Corruption Law), as well as Articles 55 and 64 of the Criminal Code.
The case number 1076 K/PID.SUS/2025 was decided on Friday, February 28, 2025. The trial was led by Dwiarso Budi Santiarto, with panel members Sinintha Yuliansih Sibarani and Achmad Setyo Pudjoharsoyo.
Prior to this, on June 24, 2024, the Corruption Court panel at the Central Jakarta District Court sentenced Karen Agustiawan for being guilty of corruption in the procurement of LNG for the period of 2011-2021. She was sentenced to nine years in prison, as well as a fine of Rp 500 million or an alternative three-month imprisonment.
Jakarta High Court also upheld the sentence for the Pertamina boss when Karen filed for appeal.
