TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - No Other Land won the Oscar for the best documentary film category. This film sheds light on the bitter life in Palestine due to the forced displacement of their homes by the Israeli army.

Quoting from Reuters, activist Basel Adra and Israeli journalist Yuval Abraham, as the directors, spent five years making the documentary film No Other Land. The film was produced between 2019 and 2023.

Through this documentary film, they shed light on the reality in the field, on the suffering experienced by the Palestinian people for decades. "No Other Land reflects the bitter reality that we have experienced for decades, and we are still fighting against it, while calling on the world to take serious action to stop injustice and ethnic cleansing of the Palestinian people," said Adra upon receiving the Oscar in 2025.

Abraham added that he and Adra made the film together to make their voice stronger. "We have seen each other, the terrible destruction in Gaza and its people that must be ended," he said.

So, what is the synopsis of the documentary film No Other Land? Here is the complete information.

Synopsis of the Film No Other Land

This film sheds light on the struggle of the Palestinian people in a small mountain village called Masafer Yatta, the West Bank, who face forced eviction by the Israeli military. Basel Adra, a Palestinian activist, documented the gradual destruction of his village by the Israeli army, demolishing houses and displacing its residents to be used as a military firing zone.

Adra also recorded the Israeli army destroying a school and filling wells with cement to prevent the Palestinian residents from rebuilding the school.

In his struggle, Basel formed a friendship with Yuval Abraham, an Israeli journalist, who assisted him in his efforts. There were differences in their living conditions; Basel faced constant oppression and violence, while Yuval enjoyed freedom and security. However, this is what made them show even deeper care and solidarity.

Quoting from Al Jazeera, although No Other Land achieved prestigious awards, this film faced distribution challenges in the United States for political reasons. Abraham and Adra did not give up; they worked to ensure that this documentary film could be screened for one week at the Lincoln Center. This effort was made to meet the requirements for Oscar nomination.

In addition to winning Oscar 2025, this documentary film also won at the Berlin International Film Festival in February 2024 and the New York Critics Circle Award.
